The Scientific Revolution is one of those rare cases where a single beat of history holds not only calamity but a genuine good. From Copernicus's On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres (1543) to Newton's Principia (1687), humankind saw the world honestly and afresh: not as an enchanted garden but as a mechanism obeying clear laws. This was a liberation. But it had a reverse side — a temptation. Having seen a machine in the universe, it was easy to see a machine in the human being as well, to reduce the living soul to a meshing of little gears. The idol here is subtle: it was not reason itself but reason's pride — the certainty that what has been fully known is all there is.

The catastrophe of this event was not blood but the shattering of a picture of the world — which for a human being can be no less terrifying. The Earth, which for millennia had been thought the center of creation, suddenly turned out to be one planet among others, hurtling around the Sun through cold emptiness. The ground gave way underfoot. The trial of Galileo in 1633 became the emblem of the collision: the Church, fearful for the familiar order, forced an old man to recant what he had seen through his telescope. Truth could not be annulled by a verdict, but the fear was real — the snug, lived-in cosmos was crumbling.

The captivity was a captivity of thought itself. The universe seemed more and more a giant clockwork, wound up and left to run on its own — and in a mechanism there is no room for the soul, for meaning, for God. Humankind risked becoming a stranger in its own house: a point on the outskirts of infinity, where everything moves by a formula and nothing "cares" about anything.

The return lay hidden within the very temptation. Mathematical natural science proved to be not a prison but a liberation of the mind — it gave people the power to understand and to foresee. And, importantly, the makers of the revolution did not consider themselves prisoners of the mechanism. For Kepler, for Newton, science was a way of knowing God: they read the laws of nature as the handwriting of the Creator, not as proof of His absence. Newton's Principia ends with a meditation on God. This age did not close the question of whether the human being and the spirit have a place in a world-machine — it opened it, for centuries to come, all the way to the Enlightenment and beyond.
