Not a rider. A pause. And within it — the cry of those slain for the Word of God and for the witness they bore:
“How long, O Sovereign Lord, holy and true, before Thou wilt judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell upon the earth?1”
The question of all questions. Abel’s cry from the ground, the weeping of the innocent who suffer, the cry of Job. Here it was — the moment of truth.
Adam held his breath. How would the Judge answer?
And to each of them was given a white robe. And they were told to rest yet a little while, until their fellow servants and their brethren, who were to be killed as they had been, should complete the number2.
Understanding pierced him like revelation. The white robes — a clothing in the righteousness of the Lamb. The cry of the slain had not gone unheard — it had sounded from the lips of the Lamb Himself upon the Cross. Their “How long?” had merged with His “Why hast Thou forsaken Me?”
